what to look for in a twitter client http://www.toolsfortwits.ca/what-to-look-for-in-a-twitter-client/ http://www.toolsfortwits.ca/what-to-look-for-in-a-twitter-client/#comments Fri, 05 Feb 2010 11:00:35 +0000 Fred The Toolman http://www.toolsfortwits.ca/?p=918

There are many Twitter clients available, some robust and some with a single or limited purpose.

Learning what to look for in a twitter client can help reduce the number of hours and tools required for your social media experience saving you valuable time, energy and money.

This is very subjective, everybody has different tastes, opinions and requirements.

  1. Does it support your O/S?
  2. Is it high capacity? If you can’t access it quickly, what is the point.
  3. Desktop, web based or mobile
  4. Is it clean and simple to setup and use? Are the streams easy to follow?
  5. Can you manage multiple accounts? Is it easy to jump between them?
  6. Can you manage and view your followers? Block, Report spam.
  7. Is there a spell check feature?
  8. Can you shorten your url’s?
  9. Can you customize it to create groups, lists, favorites, search, keywords and other parameters?
  10. Can you schedule & manage all your tweets? Sent, DM’s (in and out), @ replies, Scheduled, etc.
  11. Are the conversations easy to respond and follow? Threaded?
  12. Is there search, keyword, hashtag and other application integration like audio or picture sharing?

That’s a lowdown list of what to look for in a twitter client. If you ask these questions you will eliminate all the clients that don’t meet your needs and hone in on the one that is right for you.

Let me know what you look for and share with me anything I might have missed.

time to banish auto dm on twitter http://www.toolsfortwits.ca/time-to-banish-auto-dm-on-twitter/ http://www.toolsfortwits.ca/time-to-banish-auto-dm-on-twitter/#comments Fri, 08 Jan 2010 11:00:04 +0000 Fred The Toolman http://www.toolsfortwits.ca/?p=876

auto dm is a waste of time

I’m pretty sure it’s not just me. I think it’s time to banish auto dm  on twitter or at least have a rethink. The dm feature is a great tool to connect in a private conversation with any of your followers but it becomes hard to do when your box is full of spam type message that say “thanks for following, I’ve got a gift” or something along those lines. A private message is something that should benefit a user in a way that adds immediate connection and value.

I’ve seen very few well done auto dm messages and the time it takes to remove them all or go through them to discern which ones are real is a vast chore.

One solution might include auto @reply instead, which would make a user consider the value instead of splashing out a message across the board that everyone can see. If a message doesn’t contribute it wastes time (in that instance). The other problem is how do you as a user choose the ones to reply to.

Maybe the follow process should be refined or a little more difficult. I go to great lengths to choose my followers and actually manually review most of them. I want to find users that not only have common interest but ones that create quality tweets and have a small enough community that it will allow them to interact with me on a regular basis.

share your solutions and thoughts

Curious then, what do you guys think about auto dm? Do you have any solutions and ideas to make it a more efficient and pleasurable experience? Should it be banished. I’d love to hear some thoughts and solutions, so please comment and retweet this article to create a dialogue that will provide an effective long term resolve.
