Learning how to send private messages on Twitter is one of your early stages that will build a good foundation for effective communication. Everything that you tweet on twitter is on the public time line, which means everyone can see it.

But there is an option to keep things private using the Direct Message or DM feature. This will allow you to have a personal conversation with someone or respond to a single person for something that you want to keep private.

Note – you can only send a message to someone that is following you. This reduces unwanted messages and spamming. You can check this several ways but the easiest is to click on their profile (the @username) and see if they are following. In their profile on the right hand column, just under the update section there will be an area that has block and message. If the word message shows up, it means they are following you.

There are a few different ways to send a direct message or you could use a Twitter Client but that is more advanced. If the message section is available, simply click on it. This will take you to a page where you can type in your message, verify that it is the quality you want, hit update (here’s how to send an update on Twitter) and your message is sent. That’s really it. No more.

If you know someone is following you, there is an option to type in d or dm and the username and then type a message. This will have the same result. Eventually, you will know who is following and who isn’t so it will become easier. A simple and useful task.
